Scran and Scallie

Edinburg New Town Scran and Scully Map

Scran and Scallie is a joint venture between two of Edinburgh’s Michelin-starred chefs, Tom Kitchin and Dominic Jack. At The Scran & Scallie (which means fun and food in Scottish slang)– the menu is full of proper hearty Scottish pub food; the ultimate comfort food on a chilly autumn day. Every item on the menu is well thought out. When the restaurant opened, the two chefs worked closely with the National Library of Scotland to learn more about the history of Scottish foods and adapted those information to create classic dishes with a modern twist. Tip: go hungry or share as the portions are huge. 1 Comely Bank Rd, Stockbridge, Edinburgh, UK

Edinburgh Restaurants

The Gardener’s Cottage – This independently run restaurant prides itself in serving fresh produce grown in the garden. The restaurant is, indeed, located in a building from 1836 that was once the cottage of the gardener. This dedication to seasonal ingredients means that the menu changes regularly. The cottage is small and cosy; the two rooms are set with long communal tables. The menu is a five-course set affair but, for those who like to have a choice, lunch is served à la carte and there is brunch at weekends. If you are a vegetarian or allergic to any particular ingredients, request a copy of the set menu in advance so they can accommodate your needs. 1 Royal Terrace Gardens, London Rd, Edinburgh, UK

Set in a beatiful Georgian townhouse by the Royal Terrace 21212 is a Michelin starred restaurant. The menu explains the restaurant’s name – there are two choices for starter, main and dessert, and only one for the soup and cheese in between. The food is divine, every bite has such depth of flavour crammed into it. The kitchen is on display behind a wall of glass so you can see the talented chef Paul Kitching whiping up his culinary creations. The decor is serene: high ceilings and vast windows, chandeliers and brocade banquettes. 3 Royal Terrace, Edinburgh, UK

Fishers

Fishers – There are two branches of this renowned fish restaurant: Fishers Bistro in Leith and Fishers In The City, in the New Town. Fishers in the City is set in an old converted warehouse on the cobbled Thistle Street. Both serve fine seafood and have a wonderfully relaxed atmosphere. The menu changes quite regularly and is one of those that sounds so good it’s a struggle to decide what to choose. If you’re not a seafood enthusiast, there are always meat and veggie options. 58 Thistle St, Edinburgh, UK

Cafe Royal

cafe' royal

Entering Cafe Royal is like time-travelling back to 1863; the building is a lovely example of Parisian-style architecture and the bar features stunning stained glass windows and ornate plaster designed ceiling. Film lovers should recognise this cafe from the movie Chariots of Fire. The food is a mixture of traditional Scottish dishes and the finest seafood; in particular the oysters are excellent. I recommend starting off with the house speciality; 3 oysters and a glass of Veuve Cliquot. 19 W Register St, Edinburgh, UK
